How Ozone Treatment Clears Vehicle Odors

November 2026 · 3 min read

If you've ever tried to get rid of cigarette smoke, a wet-dog smell, or a spilled-milk odor in a vehicle, you know that air fresheners only cover things up for a day or two. Odors stay because the molecules that cause them soak into seats, carpet, headliners, and vents. Ozone treatment is one of the most effective ways to deal with them.

What is ozone treatment?

Ozone (O₃) is a form of oxygen with an extra oxygen atom. An ozone generator fills a closed vehicle with ozone, which reacts with odor-causing molecules and breaks them down, instead of just covering them with fragrance. Because ozone is a gas, it can reach places a cleaning cloth never will: deep in upholstery, under seats, and through the ventilation system.

What it's good for

  • Cigarette and cigar smoke
  • Pet odors
  • Mildew and musty smells from damp carpet or a leak
  • Food and drink spills that have soured
  • General "used car" or closed-up smells

What to expect

Ozone is powerful, which is also why it has to be done carefully. The vehicle must be completely empty of people, pets, and plants while it's being treated, and it needs to be aired out afterward before anyone gets back in. That's one reason it's best handled by a professional rather than a do-it-yourself machine.

It also works best alongside good cleaning. If an odor comes from a spill or stain, the source should be cleaned out first. Ozone then takes care of the odor that's left behind. Heavy or long-standing odors can take more than one treatment.
